Both desserts involve cake, but the ingredients and form are different.

Cake: A cake typically has one to two layers and is topped with buttercream or fondant icing. Cakes are used for birthdays, weddings, graduations, and other special occasions.

Torte: A torte usually consists of four layers of cake (mostly dessert style such as black forest, red velvet, etc.) and is usually filled with fruit, a mousse, or a custard. Tortes usually have specialty frostings such as Chantilly cream (whipped cream), mousse, or ganache. It’s a term that is commonly used in Europe but has become more prevalent in the United States.
